べトナム戦争中1961年から1970年にかけ、米国は南べトナムに枯葉剤を散布しました。ジャングルをはだかにし敵を見やすくし、食料を断つ事が目的でした。大量の枯葉剤が南べトナムの１２％の土地に撒かれました。枯葉剤には猛毒のダイオキシンが含まれ、戦後４０年近くたったいまも３００から４００万人の人々が影響を受けているといわれます。
ダイオキシンは激しい発がん性をもち、先天性障害の子供達を産み出します。米国や枯葉剤を製造した化学会社は被害に苦しむ人々に救いの手を差し伸べることを拒否しています。
べトナム枯れ葉剤被害者の会(VAVA)は被害の実態を世界に訴え、化学薬品会社から補償を勝ち取るべく努力しています。
べトナムの被害者たちは皆様の援助を必要としています。

American military sprayed Agent Arange over 12% of the soil of South Vietnam between 1961 and 1970. The aim was to rid of cover of the enemy and cut the food supply. Agent Orange contained dioxin, the most toxic chemical invented by men. Three to Four million Vietnamese are affected by it nearly 40 years after the war ended.
Dioxin is a highly carcinogenic and causes birth defects. Neither the United States government nor the chemical companies which produced these toxic chemicals are yet to accept the responsibility and make due compensation to the victims. VAVA's mission is to rase the awareness to this problem and seek justice from American government and the chemical companies. The victims need your help. Please contact the follwoing for donations
2003年春、夫グレッグは54歳で亡くなりました。予想だにしない、あっという間のことでした。原因は肝臓がん。ベトナム戦争時に浴びた枯葉剤が原因ではないか、と友人に指摘され、私は枯葉剤について知り、今のベトナムを自分の眼で確かめたい、と思いました。悲しみを乗り越えるため、何かをせざるを得なかったのです。
生前撮っていたホームビデオの存在も映画をつくる動機のひとつだったかも知れません。ホームビデオを再生することで、彼が生き返ったように感じられ、声や姿を何度も繰り返し再現したいという思いに駆られました。もっと彼の存在を感じたい。映画にすることによって、彼の存在が蘇るのではないかと思ったのです。
ベトナムでは、枯葉剤の被害者は至る所にいました。30年前には生まれてさえいなかった子ども達が、様々な病気や生まれながらの障害に苦しんでいる。しかし、大変な困難と貧困の中にありながら、愛や情、暖かさを忘れない人々にあらゆるところで出会い、レンズを通して優しさに包まれました。撮影中は自分の悲しみも忘れ、とても充実したときでした。
この映画製作に携わることで、私は苦しい数年間を生き延びてこられました。ベトナムの人々やグレッグに生かされてきたのです。そして、映画が完成したことにより、私のグレッグに対する気持ちにひとつあきらめがつきました。グレッグは死んでしまった。でも、彼の存在は違う形で残されました。時間がかかってもいい。この映画を通して、水の波紋が静かに広がり続けるように、グレッグのメッセージが世界中に広がっていくことを願っています。
坂田雅子
ドキュメンタリー映画監督。
1948年、長野県生まれ。65年から66年、AFS交換留学生として米国メイン州の高校に学ぶ。帰国後、京都大学文学部哲学科で社会学を専攻。
70年にグレッグ・デイビスと出会い、結婚。写真家としてのグレッグの仕事を手伝うかたわら、76年から、写真通信社インペリアル・プレス勤務。
95年、社長に就任。98年にIPJを設立し社長となる。
2003年のグレッグの死をきっかけに、枯葉剤についての映画製作を決意し、米国メイン州のフィルム・ワークショップでドキュメンタリー映画制作の基礎を学ぶ。04年から06年、ベトナムと米国で、枯葉剤の被害者やその家族、ベトナム帰還兵、科学者等にインタビュー取材を行う。
2007年、坂田雅子製作・監督・撮影・編集で、映画『花はどこへいった』（英語タイトル『Agent Orange -a personal requiem-』）を完成させる。

Agent Orange: a personal requiem
The San Francisco Public Library, in association with Veterans for Peace, presents on July 10, Thursday, at 6:00 PM the film “Agent Orange-a personal requiem.” The presentation will be in the Koret Auditorium of the San Francisco Library, 100 Larkin Street (at Grove).
Greg Davis, an American photojournalist living in Japan, passed away in 2003 from complications brought on by his exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange while he served in U.S. Army in Vietnam.
His wife, Masako Sakata, began on a personal journey to find out about Agent Orange, which was sprayed throughout South Vietnam more than 30 years ago.
12% of the soil of South Vietnam was contaminated with 19 million gallons of defoliants sprayed between 1961 and 1970, 12 million of which were Agent Orange containing dioxin, the most toxic chemical invented by man.
In Vietnam, Masako encountered the victims everywhere, so immediate and present. Children who were not even born then are suffering from all kinds of deformities and illnesses. In spite of their difficulties and poverty, everywhere she found love, caring, and warmth. Meeting the victims and their families helped her to heal.
The documentary also reveals some of the facts that led to an unprecedented ecological disaster.
Agent Orange: A personal requiem is an indictment of U.S. foreign policy, corporate greed, and American apathy, as well as being a celebration of love's ability to face enormous adversity.
